Kuala Lumpur: CIMB Foundation today presented 8 of the region’s top junior golfers with scholarships for an overseas training stint. This is part of the CIMB Junior Golf Development Programme, which is the junior development programme of the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic, Malaysia.

This is the second batch of juniors sent to undergo the intensive training programme, which will be conducted by the PGA TOUR Academy at its headquarters at TPC Sawgrass in Florida in December 2011.

The juniors, 4 boys and 4 girls, hail from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. They  are Paul San and Sarfina Seretharan from Malaysia, Putri Aisyah Amani and Joshua Andrew Wirawan from Indonesia, Puwit Anupansuebsai and Savitree Thavong from Thailand, and Caleb Ng and Rachel Cheang from Singapore.

They received the scholarships from the Chairman of CIMB Group, Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof. Also present at the event were Dato’ Mohd Shukri Hussin, CEO of CIMB Foundation, Ed Moorhouse, Co-Chief Operating Officer of the PGA TOUR and Shane Gillespie, Head Professional of the PGA TOUR Academy at TPC Sawgrass as well as representatives of the golf associations of the four countries.

Speaking at the event, Dato’ Shukri said, “We are very pleased that through CIMB’s title sponsorship of the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic, Malaysia, we are able to create development opportunities for the region’s top juniors with top coaches from the United States and are also able to link them with the PGA TOUR.”

“We believe that this corporate social responsibility initiative by CIMB will nurture the region’s future top golf professionals,” he added.

The juniors are part of the 128 junior golfers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand who are part of the CIMB Junior Development Programme. They are from two age groups – 12 and under, and 15 and under.

The programme is designed and conducted by the PGA TOUR Academy. In 2011, to date, three training camps were conducted this year in February, June and October by the TOUR Academy’s top coaches.

21 of the programme’s junior golfers are also present at the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic, Malaysia and had the opportunity to learn from the TOUR professionals themselves on tournament preparation during the practice round on Tuesday and ProAm on Wednesday.
