Appleby was born in Victoria, Australia and grew up on a dairy farm. He started practising by hitting balls from paddock to paddock after his daily farm chores were completed. He turned pro in 1992 and started playing in Australia before playing in the US in 1995. In that year, he won twice on the Nationwide Tour and qualified for this PGA TOUR card in 1996. Appleby is a 9-time PGA TOUR winner and has been a member of the International Team in the Presidents Cup four times. Last year he became only the fifth player in history to shoot a 59 in an official PGA TOUR event – The Greenbrier Classic.
